It's best known as a ski destination, home to Beech Mountain Resort, which offers skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating in winter, plus mountain biking and scenic activities in summer. The year-round population is only around 300–400 people, but it swells significantly with visitors and seasonal residents. It's located near Banner Elk and about a two-hour drive from both Charlotte and the Tri-Cities area of Tennessee.
